“You Can Do It!”

Canyons Resort hosts many people from all walks of life. Luckily, I have had the privilege to ski with many of them.  Recently, I was called at 9am and asked if I would like to spend the afternoon with comedian Rob Schneider.  As a big fan of Rob’s through the years, there was absolutely no hesitation on my part.  From his days on SNL as Richard “The Richmeister” Laymer and Tiny Elvis, to his turns as Deuce Bigalow and The Hot Chick, I think it is clear that the man is dedicated to making people laugh.

Two hours after being invited, I met Mr. Schneider, his fiance Patricia, their snowboarding instructor Arianne Prina and Talisker’s VP of Real Estate Bill Fiveash at Lookout Cabin. To quote Rob’s fellow SNL veteran Molly Shannon, Rob was a “superstar.”  Celebrities can be standoffish when it comes to meeting new people in unique settings, and rightfully so. If I was frequently bombarded with slack-jawed stares and autograph requests, I would learn to protect my privacy as well.  However, Rob could not have been more amiable!

People always expect comedians to be “on” at all times. But in reality they are more subdued – they’re performers after all.  Rob, however, is the exception.  During our gourmet lunch, stories were shared and laughs were had.  Not one to take himself too seriously, he was disarmingly self-deprecating and, not surprisingly, super witty.

After we each polished off our lunches – it was very family style – it was back on the slopes.  I tagged along for the second half of Patricia and Rob’s lesson.  Both were experiencing their first day ever snowboarding, (Rob loves to ski, but felt it was time to try it out) and as anyone that has been there can attest, the learning curve includes its fair share of tumbles.

Giving Rob a hand after a particularly painful looking succession of falls, I playfully commented that it was very hard for me not to recite one of his most famous lines.  He laughed and said, ” I know . . . I CAN DO IT!”

He did it

I have accrued more awesome memories during this winter than I can count, but that definitely will be up there with the best!  Rest assured, Rob made it to the base area on his board. But when he comes back to Canyons next time, I predict that he may just bring his skis!
